The compressor is shot. And the whole unit is over 10 years old. Don’t just replace the compressor or the outdoor unit, little missy, replace the whole darn thing! Outdoor and indoor. Trust me, you don’t want to know what this is going to cost. My stomach hurts.

Ahhhhhhh, the joys of home ownership!

THEY ALWAYS SAY THAT. CHECK AROUND. TRY RAY’S HVAC IN NEWTOWN (VERY HONEST). THE COMPRESSOR IS THE ONLY THING WITH MOVING PARTS .

Absolutely-get at least three or four estimates. You’d be surprised at the number of HVAC outfits that will try to turn a routine repair into a replacement. Maybe your parents have heard of some HVAC shops their friends have used. Ten years sounds a little short for a complete AC replacement; I think most units can be expected to last 15 years or so. OTOH, if you do replace your unit, you can probably get a unit that operates a little more efficiently. Given the usage patterns up there versus down here in the South, that may not be a huge deal.

Oops-didn’t realize it was your heating system and not your AC-hadn’t read the previous post. Still, get some more estimates.

    SORRY I AM WRITTING AGAIN
BUT I NEVER BELEIVED IN S-XISM UNTIL I HAVE SEE MY MBA WIFE GET BATTERED BY BONEHEAD CONTRACTORS. GET YOUR DAD ON THE CASE. MUCH RESPECT TO DONNA.

Yes, get your dad or get a contractor he knows on the spot.

They tried to browbeat my wife into all this other excessive car maintence as soon as I showed up it was a different tune. Anyways….

As soon as the guy says “you need to replace it all” then get a second opinion. You may need to replace some seals, and that’s about it. If nothing leaks or is burnt out then only the compressor needs to be replaced. Those systems can last 20-30-40 years with proper maintence. Anyways that guy is bs, you can buy a whole new system for 2-3k INSTALLED. Expensive? Well you are writing off money in interest aren’t you?
