100 Foreign Films

One day during the summer of 1996 I found myself in the dentist’s office waiting to get a tooth drilled. As I waited for the doctor, I paged through a magazine called Movieline. One of the articles piqued my interest. It was a list of the 100 greatest foreign films ever made. Carefully I ripped the pages from the magazine and stuffed them into my purse. My intention was to one day see every movie that made the list. Today I was going through old papers and I found the article. Sadly, I hadn’t made quite the dent in the list as I had hoped. Here are the movies and those in bold are the ones I’ve seen. Finding the article has re-ignited my interest in watching these movies. I just hope I can find them at Blockbuster.

Quite a list. I’ve seen fewer than twenty myself, and this includes a middle-80s period when I was on a foreign-film binge.

There’s a restored print of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg floating around; I’m hoping it comes to the Noble (the screening room within the Oklahoma City Museum of Art) this year.

And frankly, Fanny and Alexander depressed me no end. 🙂

Hmmmm, here i go, Un Chien Andalou rocks, Dali helped with that one, Aguirre, Wrath of God is in my NetFlix list, although i can give you other Herzog films to see, Bicyle Thief is a classic, awesome film, La Dolce Vita is in Netflix list, 8 1/2 rocks, Fellini rocks, Ikiru is awesome, actually i saw all of the Kursawa films, they’re all excellent, Seven Samurai and Throne of Blood are my favorites, oooo, The Kingdom is awesome, although Festen is my favorite von Trier film that didn’t make the list. M i saw in film class, Metropolis, another Fritz Lang classic ahead of it’s time. Night and Fog is on my Netflix list. Nosferatu is excellent, so is Faust that didn’t make the list, oddly. Rules of the Game is in Netflix list, i hear that is the greatest film of all time. Solaris rocks. Tokyo Story is in my NetFlix list. There are other Ingmar Bergman films that didn’t make the list, Wild Stawberries and Seventh Seal are both classics. Plus one of my favorite directors, Jean Michelle Jeunet didn’t make the list. Oh wait, this is from 96, nevermind!
