In the early seasons of Saturday Night Live, Laraine
Newman perfected a brilliant sendup of the talking head newscaster, with all the sing-song voice inflections and facial gestures. I remember when “happy talk” newscasts first appeared…you know, where the news anchor chuckles and trades barbs with the sportscaster, and everyone on the set grins like cheshire cats…I think maybe the Mary Tyler Moore show was instrumental in changing the tone and delivery of local newscasts. It’s so completely scripted and artificial.
In college I interned with one of the local newscasters. It was a sight to be seen when the cameras turned off for the commercial break. The hair dryers would come out and the women AND MEN would primp and preen! And all they are doing is reading a teleprompter.
