By golly, you gonna make me cry

Gomer is back and he has an interesting entry on songs that have moved him to the point of tears. I queued his songs up in Rhapsody, you can listen here. They’re good songs but I can’t say they move me. It got me to thinking about MY songs. The songs that have moved me to tears. I came up with this list:

She’s Got You – Patsy Cline

I guess because for a period in my life I felt exactly that way.
I’ll Spend My Life With You – The Monkees

It’s because of these lyrics: “People come and people go/ Movin’ fast and movin’ slow/ I’m in a crowd yet I’m all alone” I don’t have to tell you how much I live these lyrics everyday.
Hard Candy Christmas – Dolly Parton

Just listen to it.
I Let Love In – Nick Cave

Nick always makes me cry
Love’s Been Good To Me – Johnny Cash

You have to listen to it
Fooled Around And Fell In Love – Elvin Bishop

When Rob was courting me, he told me this was “our” song- that gesture moves me more than the song itself, but it’s a beautiful song on it’s own.
The Rainbow Connection

Reminds me of when I was a little girl and Charles Grodin.
I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry – Hank Williams

I’m not sure if I cried listening to this song or if I am just mixing up my own life experiences with Jim Varney when he played Jed Clampett in the movie version of The Beverly Hillbillies.
Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down – Johnny Cash

It’s all about loneliness.
Red Rubber Ball – The Cyrkle

Last night I asked Lisa what song makes her cry and she said, “Red Rubber Ball by The Cyrkle.” It seemed like a crazy choice until she told me that that’s the 45 I left on my record player when I first left for Germany back when I was a young teenager and she listened to it over and over whenever she missed me. How sweet is that?

You can listen to these songs here.

What are the songs that make you cry?

That entire recording is wonderful. Who would believe that two such different performers could put out such a touching album?

Lisa is RIGHT on! Memories..both good and bad…are so powerfully associated with sound as to be almost inseperable.

“The final cut” by Pink Floyd for me brings back the summer as a swimming instructor at a youth camp…and the day that my mother called to tell me my best friend from middle school had just killed himself. I was devastated, and terrible guilt set in due to the fact we had drifted apart. Always wondered what would have happened if I had been home…and availible. I cannot play that album without memories of him.

    Excellent choices.

Personally, I’d substitute Sinatra’s version of “Love’s Been Good To Me”.

Ever heard The Seekers version of “Red Rubber Ball”?
    Take a listen.

Patsy Cline…I prefer “Crazy’ just for the melody (and Willie Nelson).

Sinatra does have a good version of Love’s Been Good to Me but I do prefer Johnny Cash’s version– mainly because he sounds so ripped up, as if he’s reflecting on a life very much lived. I gotta go seek out the Seekers!

  5. Audra

That “Cat’s in the Cradle” song makes me cry when it comes on the radio. And both “Empty Chairs at Empty Tables” and “A Little Fall of Rain” from Les Miserables.

    Ugh and GRRRRRR!

Your playlist of my tunes contains the INCORRECT version of “Fake plastic Trees” and “Ten Years Gone”

PLEASE fix this. Those versions make me want to defecate, not cry.
