From the very beginning of this blog (practically 10 years ago), I set a few rules for myself. I would not thrust my opinions down anyone’s throat, political or religious nor would I mention anything that might embarrass my mother or father. It wasn’t hard to follow these simple rules; however, even though I was pretty mum on the topic, readers somehow just knew my political stance. The thing is, I straddled many different beliefs through the years. When I was in college, I allowed myself to be brainwashed by my professors yet I still clung to some Libertarian ideas due to my father’s influence. As soon as I was out of Academia, my Libertarian part began to take over. It was during Clinton’s second term that I began to get so disgusted that I decided I needed to take a stronger stand against certain philosophies and so I registered as a Republican. Besides, those Libertarian ideals seemed impossible to achieve and almost too radical to ever be adopted. After a few years, I turned everything off and apathy took over.
Things changed for me yesterday. Robert and I went to the Ron Paul Philadelphia Rally. Dr Paul said things that I didn’t think I would ever hear. This man actually made sense.
I have a candidate. I’m getting back into the game.

Ron Paul?
He must have been really good to catch your attention.
Ron Paul takes sensible stands on most issues, but I have to take exception wirh his (and the Libertarian Party’s) isolationalist views on foreign policy. Libertarians would have you believe that the United States shouldn’t be fighting foreign wars. Ron Paul reminds me of Charles Lindbergh, the first man to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Lindbergh was famously
“anti-war” before World War II. He thought that the threat posed by Nazi Germany was overblown, just like Ron Paul thinks that the radical Islamic threat against the US is overblown. We all know now how incredibly stupid and short-sighted Charles Lindbergh was.
I also believe in less government intrusion into people’s lives but I think that Ron Paul’s foreigh policy is simplistic and dangerous.
Like you, I’m a conservative who thinks that the Republican Party’s slate of Presidential candidates is full of political chameleons (Rudy Guilani and Mitt Romney, for instance) who will flip flop on any issue and say anything to get elected. The only principled candidate in the race is Ron Paul, but I can’t vote for him.
The Democrat Party has an advantage over the Republican Party. It is populated with nincompoops who will vote for ANY Democrat over ANY Republican. They don’t care that Hillary Clinton and her husband are schemers and liars…they’ll vote for AHYONE other than a Republican.
I despair for our country. I truly do.
Oh Donna…
Ron Paul is the candidate of the Truthers – the 9/11 conspiracy people – and the lunatic fringe of the left. He has a long-standing history of Anti-semitism, support of the PLO and indifference to Iranian nuclear weapons.
Don’t get me wrong. At first he sounds reasonable on a number of fundamental issues, but as you scratch the surface … it’s really ugly.
He’s the candidate of Hutton Gibson – Mel Gibson’s Holocaust-denying dad, radical Islamists, and the really wacky left. As the Spanish say, “Dime con quien andas y dire quien eres?”
Surely, the libertarians have someone better for you!
Kozaburo, you sound scared.
A lot of people are scared of Ron Paul. As well they should be. He’s got a fanatical base of 20-something kids who can’t locate the United States on a world map.
Oh bother!
I’m not a republican in any way shape or form, but out of the bunch he seems the most rational IF ONLY because he doesn’t seem to be swayed by the noisy minority on your side. Yes, he’s anti choiced, but that is to be expeceted from you all.
While his ideas may be refreshing, they are completely impractical and possibly detrimental. As your reader above said, an isolationist stance is not a good idea for a super power…and frankly unethical. But again, republicans.
His tax policies are bonkers. There isn’t a person, left or right, who wouldn’t appreciate an end to income tax. But if you guys think “spending wisely” is going to pay the bills (not to mention the HUGE debt the republican’s elected offical put us in), you’re kidding yourselves.
“Concerned” is more like it. The Paulians strike me as being akin to the anarchists who tore up Seattle a few years ago. The Paulians hack just about every online political poll (i.e. http://www.cnbc.com/id/21257762) to the extent that Charles – the “sysop” of LGF started adding “Ron Paul” as a potential selection in all of his polls.
It’s not like I don’t understand the appeal of the “outsider” candidate. I was a big McCain supporter in 2000 for precisely that reason. And the Republicans have a really bad set of choices as I see it, which makes it worse. And Ron Paul has charisma to be sure, but…
Well, someone, by definition, has to be the smartest person in the entire Ronulan Empire – so why not Donna?
Thank you to all who contributed to this post (even the one’s who got caught in my WordPress toilet filter).
Anyone who provokes such visceral and emotional reaction deserves attention. My interest in Dr Paul has grown.
Before anyone forms any opinions based on the comments posted to this entry, please listen to Dr Paul– you can find many of his speeches on Youtube.
From Dr, Paul’s website…

Ron Paul consludes that Iraq is now more dangerous than when we entered it. That sort of statement normally comes from the mouths of Al Queda terrorists, Barack Obama, and the mental midgets that infest the Democrat Party. What sane person actully believes that Iraq would be safer with a murderous thug like Hussein at the helm?
I’d like to ask Mr. Paul if our involvment in World II was an “entaglement” that would have earned the scorn of our founding fathers.
Would Mr. Paul have preferred a world in which the Third Reich owned half the world?
What exactly is Mr. Paul smoking? The guy’s a NUT.
Donna,
It is time for you to get back in the political game indeed. I was lib registered for years, but bailed on Ron Paul, I think his ideas are dangerous, and as a military spouse, he offends me.
my 2 cents…
I have always foud your love of country to be one of the reasons I love you so much. There re few people that understand how lucky we are to be living in this country!
