Pet Peeve #546,281

Why do Web sites have an intro flash animation? I have never once sat through one. I always click skip. It is such a waste of time. What is the point and why do people keep using them? My belief is it is an ego trip. “How wonderful! My name/company name in different typefaces, racing around a box– people are going to LOVE IT!”

It was an early “theory” of web design that you had to “lure in” the customer. That said, it was a silly theory since customers *already clicked on your website*. They’re already at the URL, Einstein!

Unfortunately, these geniuses convinced zillions of VPs to spend tens of thousands of dollars for these things. There is no better example of corporate America’s ego problem and inability to admit a mistake than the “Skip Intro” button.

In web design progression I think flash animations are the next generation blink tag – only more annoying, less cross-browser compatible and with a much larger download weight (and wait 🙂
    That’s progress for you.
