When I was a little girl, I loved getting mail. It happened so rarely unless it was my birthday. When an envelope came addressed to me, I would get absolutely giddy! Things have changed considerably since then. I HATE mail. I let it pile until it’s such a huge mountain that I have no choice but to go through it. Most of it is credit card offers and mortgage refinancing offers. This afternoon I decided to go through the pile and as I ripped open each envelope, shredding the contents, my shredder broke. MY SHREDDER BROKE! There was still a pile of mail left and I ended up just ripping everything into tiny little pieces. I now have tons of little paper cuts all over my right index finger. I wonder if I use the shredder too liberally? Is it really important to shred Christmas Card envelopes? Perhaps it is enough to just rip out my address and rip that to pieces keeping everything else intact. I don’t know.
Do you shred every single piece of mail, envelope included? How do you deal with your mail?

No envelopes or anything stuffed in envelopes that doesn’t have personal info. Like direct mail stuffers or APR explanations. I just pull out statements or anything with my name and address on them and shred that.
I reduced my junk mail 95% by this website. It is the Direct Marketing Association and it worked. Check out the website

I only now get junk mail from businesses that I have requested info from or that I have ordered something from.
I have heard that you should tear off and shred your address labels from catalogs because someone might be able to order using your customer number. I don’t know if there is anything to that. I don’t order through catalogs. And of course shred credit card offers, and anything that has your bank account information and pay stubs.
I definitely don’t see any reason to shred your address from any other mail, like cards. What is somebody going to do with your address? If they could steal your identity from that piece of information alone, well, they could just as easily get that out of the phonebook without dumpster diving.
Shred everything. EVERYTHING.
Otherwise, the terrorists win.
