This is one of only two “summer” flix I’m actually going to drag myself to. (The other, inevitably, is “Snakes on a Plane.”)

Snakes on a Plane doesn’t do it for me. I really want to see Superman but I think I might have waited too long and it is probably out of the bigger theaters== Darn!

I saw an interesting observation about this movie somewhere on the net the other day (can’t remember where). Apparently the gist of the movie is that a guy finds out his girlfriend is asuperhero and breaks up with her. She decides to “gets even” with him for breaking up with her. The writer’s point was that this demonstrates an obnoxious double standard. Suppose they had made a comedy about a male superhero who refuses to accept that his girlfriend has broken up with him and uses his powers to “get even” with her for it. *Nobody* would think it was funny no matter how campy they made the revenge. There would undoubtedly be *howls* of protest and the movie would immediately be condemmed as abhorrently misogynistic. I mean, imagine what the reaction would be to the poster on the website if the genders were reversed. It’s sort of like making a comedy out of a domestic violence situation in which the perpetrator is female.

Craig– I didn’t realize that was the plot! I thought it was about a Superwoman who got dumped by a jerk and she was upset and she has to learn how to deal with her anger and her strength…

There are a lot of double standards. There was a movie that came out last year with that blonde guy with the weird nose where he and his buddy crash weddings. Apparently there is a male rape scene in it that was played for laughs. Could you imagine the inverse?

Well, it’s not that he dumps her because she’s a superhero; he dumps her because he thinks she’s whiny and clinging and otherwise intolerable. (Not even the contemporary Hollywood male, generally regarded as the dumbest biped on earth, is stupid enough to dump a woman who can break him in half with a single motion.)

And I really hope that this unhappy couple won’t Learn a Life Lesson in the last reel; this sort of thing always leaves me vaguely – sometimes not so vaguely – annoyed.

    Hey Donna-

Check out Superman Returns in IMAX at the UA Theatre in King of Prussia (next to Best Buy on Goddard Blvd).

Personally I enjoyed the movie though it’s definitely not like previous versions.

If you’re going to watch it all, see it in IMAX.

I think that is might be what I do— I had planned on seeing Willy Wonka that way but I never got around to it.

I thought it was like the other versions and that’s why I was looking forward to it. Regardless, I still want to see it (My gal Peta Wilson has a small part!)
