Marianne von Zipper

The day is long when you awake at 4am. It’s not even 7pm and I am ready to sleep. This evening I watched Girl on a Motorcycle. I quite liked it yet it was very different from what I was expecting. I assumed it was going to be in black and white but actually it was in brilliant technicolor. Although I knew Marianne Faithfull was the star, I thought the movie would be in French, wrong again. I think she was the only one who knew English, many of the actors appeared to have learned their lines phonetically. I also wasn’t expecting the psychedelic dream sequences. (Floating clown heads, naked women, whip wielding circus ringmaster) Alain Delon played her lover. He got to say such great lines as, “Your body is like a violin in a velvet case” and “Your toes are like tombstones.” The only issue I have with the movie is that Marianne Faithhfull’s role wasn’t really a free spirit. She rode her Harley all over Europe but only so she could get to Alain. There was an element of Run Lola Run to the movie. Especially in the voice-over narration which reminded me of when Lola was running and you could hear her internally singing, “I wish I were a hunter in search of different food.” Or whatever the line was.
