SECOND ROW! SMACK DAB IN THE MIDDLE!!!
The seats were PERFECT! Max stood less than 10 feet from us. He and the orchestra were immaculate. I immediately imagined myself in a 1930’s movie but in color! The fellow next to me said, “He’s a Teutonic Fred Astaire but with shoulders!” I thought that was a clever description. Max sang Bei mir bist du schön and I just sat on the edge of my seat waiting to hear how he pronounced schön. Would it be a Wayne Newton schön (Danke Shane)? Or would he stand up for his father tongue and pronounce it correctly? I guess he had no choice since it must rhyme with “explain.”
Bei Mir Bist Du Schön, please let me explain
Bei Mir Bist Du Schön, means you’re grand
Bei Mir Bist Du Schön, again I’ll explain
It means you’re the fairest in the la-a-a-and
(BTW, take away the umlaut and the word goes from “beautiful” to “already”)
After the performance Lisa and I and the man who sat next to us (Teutonic Fred Astaire) went to Ludwig’s Garten and had some German beer! My hope was Max and his troupe would end their night at Lugwig’s too. I was wrong. Of course, after the Peter Tork experience, I try to stay away from performers.
Here are the songs Max sang:
Music Maestro, Please
Ich steh’ mit Ruth gut
Bei mir bist du schön
Salome
Singing in the Rain
Sie sind mir so sympatisch
Ninon
Scöner Gigolo
Cheek to Cheek
Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf
Am Amazonas
Over My Shoulder
Sweet Sue
Mein Gorilla
Intermission
Happy Days Are Here Again
Love Thy Neighbor
Hab keine Angst vor dem ersten Kuss
Coubanakan
Night and Day
Wir sind von Kopf bis Fuß auf Liebe eingestellt
Dein is mein ganzes Herz
Avalon
Dort tanzt Lulu
Cosi Cosa
Encore
Dream a Little Dream

German beer, mmmmmmmm…
If you like good German-style pilsner (OK – so pilsner was originally Czech beer but hey the Germans did a fine job with the style) try Prima Pils from Pennsylvania’s own Victory Brewing.

You mean it’s not “Buy me a beer, Mister Shane”?
If I’m ever in your town Donna I’ll be sure to check out Ludwig’s.:-)
