Lisa gave me a gift certificate to a local spa for a massage. The thought of walking into the place and asking for a massage disturbs me. I have always believed in tackling irrational fears so this is a good excuse if not just to get a massage but to do something that frightens me. I don’t know what it is that makes me so queasy*. Why should I be embarrassed to ask for a service they provide? For a long time, I was scared that the masseur would take one look at my body and say, “I would prefer not to touch you.” That doesn’t worry me too much anymore. The thing is, I had a massage once before.
About 3 years ago, Lisa and I vacationed at a Mexican resort. The last day, I had a massage, spur of the moment. It was the most relaxed I have ever felt. I remember afterward, floating outside and ordering a Dos Equis. I spent the next couple hours swinging back and forth overlooking the ocean. I tell you, more bars should have swings. I look back to that moment in time whenever I feel stressed or overworked.
I know why Lisa gave me the certificate. It was very thoughtful. Now I just have to use it.
*1. I don’t want to be naked in front of another person
2. I am afraid I will groan
3. I am afraid I might fart

Donna Donna Donna,
You are a pretty girl so stop it.
Maybe I can help.
I too used to feel a little uncomfortble during massages…the whole naked thing.
2 things.
1)pretend the client that was in there before you was completely out of shape.
2) have a man do it, not a woman….
3) it is ok to groan…..
Consider the “problem” that men have when they
get a massage. I guess you just can’t keep a
good man down.

Why not listen to some Bon Jovi before getting a massage? The music should put you in a good frame of mind. It’s uplifting and has cross-cultural appeal.
Friday night at 10:30pm, there is a special on Country Music Television, featuring Bon Jovi and Sugarland:

You owe it to yourself to Tivo the show. Consider it as a modern day equivalent of Simon and Garfunkle’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water”. Music to soothe the sole during anxious times.
On a more personal note, you’re not all that far from Sayreville, N.J. – Bon Jovi’s hometown.
Over the summer, you can take a tour of his alma matter, Sayreville War Memorial High School. Several dozen Japanese tourists fly to see it every summer – it’s a money maker for the district.
In the words of Bubba (Forrest Gump), “that’s all I have to say about that”.
You shouldn’t feel awkward getting a massage- it’s for your health.
I do self-massage at home to get lactic acid out of my tissues. (Workout by-product.) Buy a bottle of good massage oil & a short book on acupressure. It’s also an aromatherapy treatment with scented oil. Enjoy!
