The questions came in, “Why do you do this?” and “Do you ever get mean and nasty comments?”
Taking up far too many shelves on my bookcase are the journals that I’ve kept since I was 9 years old. The first journal was more a collection of cartoons and drawings than a traditional diary but that changed as I got older. I always imagined that at some point people would read what I wrote but I always figured it would be more along the lines of family or historians laughing at the ravings of an old dead woman’s long lost journals. I stumbled onto this blogging thing back in ’99. It just seemed like a natural progression of my journal. I can’t say I do this as an ego boost since so few people read this blog, although my aim is mainly to make people laugh. When I am out and about I stay more alert than I would otherwise since I am always thinking in terms of how can I write about this situation so people can laugh and enjoy it with me. It really is only recently that people have started to read and comment on what I write but even with that said I don’t get much traffic at all. I love reading the comments that are posted. I do get some pretty cruel comments from time to time but it really doesn’t bother me. When someone posts something I consider inappropriate, I just delete it.

I love reading this blog. It’s a peek into a life 180 degrees different from mine, and also, bits of Americana I never have heard of since my parents are immigrants. You’re a unique chick. You’re very pretty too, even though you always act like you don’t believe it. xoxoxoxox.
I feel the same way minus the “immigrants” part.Have a nice day .Just say no to nasty blogs.:-)
Okay, fair enough.
Blogging does seem like a logical progression/extension for someone who’s always enjoyed keeping a journal of some kind.
I hope my question wasn’t too forward – although I’m honored that a whole entry was dedicated to address an inquiry put forward by me. Actually, that’s not completely true. I believe your co-worker’s comments put the question in my head.
You mentioned that some of your old journals took on the form of cartoons. I’d love to see some of these early cartoons. You should scan a few and post them. Were they sophisticated, single-panel little insights (ala the New Yorker), or were they 4-panel nature lessons (ala Mark Trail)? Cartoons are a great way to express yourself.
Truth be told, ever since I ran across your site about a year ago, I’m inspired to try one of these blogs myself, unfortunately, I don’t think I’m interesting enough to make it anything more than a waste of my time.
Like the two posters above, I enjoy visiting Donnaville every day. It’s a nice little burg.
Oh yes, my litle cartoons were very sophisticated. Most of them consisted of stick drawings of me wearing legwarmers and carrying E.T. The insights usually read something like: I [heart] LUKE SKYWALKER AND RICKY SCHROEDER!
Start a blog Nathan! I’ll read it! And don’t worry about not seeming interesting enough– that didn’t stop John from blogging! 😉 (Just teasing John! I couldn’t help myself!)
Honestly, don’t worry about being interesting. Do it because you want to and kindred spirits will find you.
I agree with Gaby, this blog is a daily staple in my web life. I’ve found something here that is similar to my own personal experiences. You are quite a unique and wonderful person. You have intellegence, wit, success and a sense of humor that 99% of the people in this world can’t match.
Which is why I’ve kept coming back to this blog for almost 5 years now…. Good luck and don’t work too hard.
